According to the the home newspaper for the school, which is located in Arcata, just south of Eureka, the decision was made as a result of budget cuts needed because the university is running a nearly $10 million deficit in its general operating budget, and noted that to maintain football it cost the school $1 million a year.

Boosters are critical of the decision with one suggesting that the administration knew all along it was going to do this.

With the next closest NCAA Division II conference being the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, a Colorado-centric league whose schools are a good 1,000 miles or more away from GNAC country, the GNAC schools have for many years played a round-robin league schedule in order to fill out football schedules to minimize travel costs.

To lose one of those teams drops the GNAC to four football-playing members, and we don’t believe that the league can sustain itself with so few teams.

Boosters had a fundraising campaign ongoing since last fall, when the school attempted then to cut the program only to change its mind later and allow this season to take place because of strong public pushback.

They had, according to one, raised in the neighborhood of 0-400,000 out of a needed 0k to save the program, and the head of that effort told a local TV station that some of that money had come from HSU’s football league, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

In any event, the coming next couple of years as a result of this one school’s decision could see significant change for local small-college athletics, and that could impact opportunities for current Valley college athletes and those desiring that option after high school.

The decision itself we find disappointing, but considering that the school had attempted this once before, should not have been seen as a surprise.
